Nvidia Board Probes Alleged China Intelligence Operation
Nvidia’s board has launched an independent investigation into whether CEO Jensen Huang was targeted by a foreign intelligence operation, following reports that China’s Ministry of State Security recruited Alice Huang, an executive at Nvidia customer Megaspeed. Jensen Huang acknowledged an affair with Alice Huang, apologized to his family and employees, and said he would cooperate with the inquiry; the board says it currently has no reason to believe national security or Nvidia’s confidential information was compromised, and Nvidia says Huang remains committed to leading the company. Three Republican House committee chairs have requested a closed-door briefing with Huang about his interactions with Alice Huang and Nvidia’s safeguards against foreign espionage. Megaspeed has been accused of helping move billions of dollars’ worth of restricted AI chips to China, while Nvidia says an internal investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing and that Huang shares ordinary business information, not sensitive trade secrets or national-security information. The allegations have heightened concerns amid U.S. restrictions on advanced chip exports to China and the strategic importance of AI technology.
