Beijing Rejects Anthropic Chief’s Calls to Curb AI

China rejected Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s call for Washington to restrict China’s access to advanced AI chips and chipmaking equipment, warning that fearmongering, confrontation and “vicious competition” would undermine global AI governance. Amodei argued that a Chinese lead in AI would pose a grave danger to the United States and the world, while also saying that slowing the technology’s advance would require cooperation with China. Beijing’s state security minister separately warned that AI could threaten China’s political system, digital infrastructure, public order and national defense, even as state media portrayed calls for restraint as an effort to contain China. The dispute comes as Chinese companies produce increasingly capable and often cheaper AI models, with President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping expected to discuss AI governance at a planned September 24 meeting.
