Central Valley ICE Raids Stir Voter Fears
A surge in federal immigration arrests in California’s Central Valley has fueled concerns that Latino residents, including U.S. citizens with undocumented relatives, may avoid voting in a closely contested congressional race. The White House directed the enforcement push, according to a U.S. official cited by Reuters, though there is no public evidence that the raids were intended to suppress turnout. Democratic candidate Randy Villegas called the timing an attempt to intimidate voters, while Republican Rep. David Valadao acknowledged the fear in immigrant communities and urged enforcement to focus on public-safety threats. Organizers and election advocates also warn that reports or rumors of ICE near polling places could themselves discourage voting; federal law prohibits immigration agents from polling sites and bars voter intimidation. Similar concerns have been raised in Texas, where advocates say broader barriers to voting may pose a greater threat than agents actually appearing at polls.
