Meloni urges single EU voice in Ukraine talks
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni warned that Europe could be sidelined in Ukraine peace negotiations unless EU countries end competing diplomatic efforts and agree on one representative authorized to speak for the bloc. In a letter to European Council President António Costa, she argued that the current lack of coordination undermines Europe’s credibility and called for leaders to define both the envoy and the scope of their mandate. Meloni proposed discussing the issue at an informal EU summit in Dublin and reaching a decision at the bloc’s December summit, while coordinating with the United Kingdom, Norway and other European partners. She said she is not seeking a negotiating seat for herself or Italy, but Rome will not accept commitments made without an EU mandate.
