Russian Strikes Destroy 13 Million Books, Threaten Industry

Russian strikes have destroyed more than 13 million books in Ukraine over two months, roughly one-third of the country’s annual print output, causing at least $39.3 million in reported damage. The Aug. 1 attack on the Ranok warehouse in Kharkiv destroyed about 8 million books, including roughly 620,000 school textbooks, after a fire burned for nearly a week. Printing facilities, publishing houses and bookstores have also been damaged, threatening school supply chains and potentially extending production timelines for educational materials. Publishers warn that the losses could force smaller companies to close and reduce investment in new Ukrainian writers, while officials describe the attacks as an effort to weaken Ukrainian cultural identity and national resilience.
