Localized Cease-Fire Begins Near Oleshky
Ukraine and Russia began a localized cease-fire around Russian-occupied Oleshky on Oct. 27, ahead of a humanitarian mission to deliver supplies and potentially open evacuation corridors for up to 2,000 people. The White House said Melania Trump helped broker the pause, which was expanded and began two days early; Russia continued attacks elsewhere, and previous local truces have often collapsed. Separately, President Volodymyr Zelensky had proposed an energy cease-fire under which Ukraine would halt strikes on Russian oil refineries if Russia stopped attacking Ukrainian energy infrastructure, alongside maritime access, grain exports and a full prisoner exchange. Finland’s president and Norway’s prime minister held their first known direct call with Vladimir Putin since the invasion, then spoke with Zelensky. Zelensky warned Moscow may seek a separate deal with the U.S. or NATO to reshape Europe’s security order, including restrictions on alliance infrastructure, and said such discussions should follow the war’s end; he also cautioned that rolling back NATO security or reducing U.S. troops in Europe could signal weakness.
