The White House said in a Friday, Oct. 23, 2026 news release that first lady Melania Trump helped broker a localized ceasefire in Russian-occupied Oleshky, set to begin Oct. 29, 2026, for humanitarian aid deliveries and civilian evacuations. Officials estimate roughly 1,700 to 2,000 people remain, most elderly, in the city on the Dnipro River that once had about 24,000 residents and now lacks electricity, heat, and running water, with mined roads. Melania Trump said the situation is dire, that remaining residents urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water, and that without her intervention aid and evacuation of the elderly would have been impossible. She said she learned of the crisis at a private discussion during the Fostering the Future Together event in New York at UNGA and, with a representative, worked directly with both sides on the terms; evacuees will get transport to a preferred destination in Russia or Ukraine. Neither government immediately commented publicly. The news came as Steve Witkoff met Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Norway then Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg on Wednesday with a peace proposal; the Donbas dispute remains the main obstacle to a broader deal.

A short ceasefire like this one on the 29th might not solve much but at least it lets civilians leave safely for now.
Evacuating 1700 to 2000 mostly old folks from occupied territory is the right priority even if it takes until late October.
Melania Trump brokering this ceasefire could finally get some real aid to those elderly residents stuck in Oleshky.
