Berman Defeats Steil, Flips Wisconsin Seat
Democrat Mitchell Berman defeated Republican incumbent Bryan Steil in Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District, flipping a seat Republicans had held for decades and making Berman the district’s first Democratic representative in more than 30 years. Berman, an emergency room nurse and first-time candidate, campaigned on lowering health care and household costs, supporting working families and workers, and improving government accountability. He said he would represent all constituents, including those who did not vote for him, while Steil conceded and thanked supporters after serving the district for eight years. The upset reflected voter frustration over affordability and a desire for change in the southeastern Wisconsin district.
