Democrat Peggy Flanagan defeated Republican Michele Tafoya in Minnesota’s Senate race, keeping retiring Sen. Tina Smith’s seat in Democratic hands and making Flanagan the first Native American woman elected to the Senate. Flanagan campaigned on affordability, health care, corruption and immigration, including opposition to the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Minnesota; her campaign also faced scrutiny over fraud scandals during her tenure as lieutenant governor. Separately, with Democrats projected to take control of the House, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said voters had rejected extremism and corruption and pledged investigations and greater accountability when the new Congress convenes in January.

Voters clearly rejected the immigration crackdown, which helped Democrats hold the seat against Tafoya.
The state fraud scandals make this win even more important for cleaning up government accountability.
It's great to see Peggy Flanagan win and become the first Native American woman in the Senate. Minnesota needs that kind of representation.
