Arizona voters back grocery tax cap but reject mileage tax
Arizona voters considered eight statewide ballot measures in the 2026 midterm election. Early, unofficial returns showed Proposition 316 passing with 59% support; it would generally cap city grocery taxes at 2% after July 2027 and require voter approval for them. Proposition 141, which would have barred taxes based on how much a person drives, was being rejected. Another proposal would require certain larger and county school districts to spend at least 60% of their budgets on classroom expenses, with escalating requirements and potential state funding penalties for noncompliance. Separately, a new law lets some voters who drop off early ballots show approved ID to bypass later signature verification, which officials expect to speed counting, although close races may still take time to call.
