Hamilton Defeats Marshall in Kansas Senate Race
Democrat Adam Hamilton defeated Republican Sen. Roger Marshall in Kansas, winning roughly 52% of the vote and flipping a seat Democrats had not won since 1932. The victory gave Democrats a major boost in their effort to control the Senate and came in a state President Trump carried by 16 points in 2024. Hamilton, a moderate Methodist pastor and political newcomer, campaigned on affordability and appealed to voters across party lines, linking Marshall to Trump’s tariffs, high fuel costs amid the Iran war and Republican health care cuts. Marshall also faced scrutiny over his medical-debt practices and residency and remained closely aligned with Trump. The result made Kansas an unexpected national battleground and marked a break in the state’s long Republican dominance.
