Donalds projected as Florida’s first Black governor

Republican Byron Donalds is projected to defeat Democrat David Jolly in Florida’s gubernatorial race, extending the GOP’s control of the governor’s office. The contest was closer than many expected, despite Republicans’ recent dominance in the state. Donalds will become Florida’s first Black governor and is campaigning on continuing the conservative policies associated with outgoing Gov. Ron DeSantis. Jolly argued for a change in direction, highlighting affordability and property insurance; the candidates also differed over how the state should address hurricane coverage.
