Democrats Projected to Win House as Senate Remains Uncertain
News organizations projected Democrats to win control of the House, with early estimates putting them above the 218-seat majority threshold and some forecasting more than 250 seats. The victory would give Democrats a platform to block parts of President Donald Trump’s agenda and investigate his administration when the new Congress convenes in January 2027. Voter dissatisfaction over the cost of living, higher fuel prices, tariffs and the war with Iran appeared to weigh on Republicans, who underperformed in several races and failed to hold some seats they had sought to gain through redistricting. Democrats also scored notable Senate wins, including Roy Cooper’s North Carolina victory and Jon Ossoff’s reelection in Georgia, but control of the Senate remained uncertain as other closely contested races were unresolved. The results marked a significant setback for Republicans, though the final balance of power and the size of the Democratic House majority depended on remaining counts.
