Villegas leads Valadao in CA-22 early returns
Early returns showed Democrat Randy Villegas leading Republican Rep. David Valadao in California’s 22nd Congressional District, a closely watched Central Valley contest, though only a portion of votes had been counted. The race drew national attention and substantial spending, with California’s newly redrawn map making the district more favorable to Democrats. Villegas campaigned on lowering costs, expanding health care and immigration reform, with support from prominent progressives; Valadao emphasized agriculture, water policy and his record representing the district. A pre-election poll also found Villegas ahead, while noting the race could tighten when undecided voters were asked to choose.
