Democrats Lead Early in Alaska Governor Race and Arizona Contests
Humboldt County officials were processing about 21,000 ballots received by Election Day and reported record use of drop boxes, with vote-count updates expected through the week. Early Alaska returns showed Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins leading the governor’s race with 55% of the vote from 11% of precincts; without a candidate winning more than half, the contest would proceed to ranked-choice voting. In Iowa, Republican Secretary of State Paul Pate led challenger Ryan Peterman 53% to 47% with 94 counties reporting, after a campaign dispute over election administration and the disclosure of voter data to the Justice Department. Early Arizona figures showed Democrats leading in all statewide races, though results were preliminary. In Colorado, election-protection volunteers answered voter questions and monitored for problems as voters considered a proposal requiring additional identification information on mail ballots; supporters said it would strengthen security, while opponents warned it could reject valid votes. Colorado’s governor’s race featured favored Democrat Phil Weiser and Republican Victor Marx, with no final outcome established; a congressional race would bring new representation to Denver’s 1st District after incumbent Diana DeGette lost her primary to Melat Kiros, and an opinion article criticized the primary system for low turnout and outcomes that may diverge from overall voter preferences.
