Wiener to Succeed Pelosi After Chan Concedes
California state Sen. Scott Wiener is set to succeed Nancy Pelosi as San Francisco’s representative in Congress after Supervisor Connie Chan conceded, saying she saw no path to victory despite ballots remaining to be counted. Wiener led roughly 55% to 45% and will be the first openly LGBTQ+ person to represent San Francisco in the House, overcoming Pelosi’s endorsement of Chan. The contest highlighted differences over housing development, tenant and small-business protections, and labor, as well as scrutiny of Wiener’s support from political action committees and tech-backed donors; Wiener also raised more money overall. Pelosi’s departure ends nearly four decades in Congress and marks a rare political setback for her in her home city.
