Johnson Won’t Lead House Republicans in Minority
After Democrats’ sweeping midterm victory, Republicans will enter the next Congress as the minority in both chambers. House Speaker Mike Johnson will not seek to lead House Republicans in the minority, setting up a contest between Steve Scalise and Jim Jordan; Jordan has formally announced his candidacy and called for Republicans to unite against the Democratic agenda. President Donald Trump declined to endorse a candidate and said he would stay out of the leadership race. In the Senate, John Thune said Republicans would work with Trump to resist Democratic policies and defend their record, while some conservatives criticized his leadership and response to the losses.
