Pentagon Estimates Iran War Cost Tops $47 Billion
The U.S. war with Iran has cost more than $47 billion, according to Pentagon estimates provided to Congress, with roughly $29 billion spent on munitions and about $6 billion on damaged or lost equipment. The estimate does not include damage to U.S. bases, which one investigation put at an additional $5 billion; reports also describe extensive damage to military facilities and aircraft, and warn that replacing depleted munitions could take years. The conflict has killed at least 21 U.S. service members and wounded 865, while more than 50,000 have been deployed to the region. President Donald Trump has said major strikes remain an option after the midterm elections, even as Iran says it is pursuing diplomacy through regional intermediaries and considering a mediated proposal.
