US Envoys Visit Taybeh After Attacks on Diplomats in West Bank
U.S. diplomats Riley Barnes, assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labor, and Brian Burch, U.S. ambassador to the Holy See, visited Taybeh, a Christian Palestinian village in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, after attacks on foreign diplomats and civilians in the area. The officials visited the Latin Convent church and were expected to meet with members of the local Christian community, amid concerns about rising settler violence. Israeli officials blamed Israeli rioters for an attack on Belgian, French and Polish diplomats and a French mayor, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the diplomats had entered a sensitive area without prior coordination. A U.S. photojournalist was also hospitalized after being assaulted while covering an olive harvest; as of Sunday, Israeli authorities had announced no arrests in the incidents.
