Iran Ties Hormuz Reopening to U.S. Conditions
Iran and the United States are exchanging proposals through mediators, including Qatar and Pakistan, but Tehran says no agreement has been reached and calls Washington’s response inadequate. Iran says it could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days if the United States accepts conditions reportedly including an end to regional hostilities, lifting sanctions and the blockade on Iranian ports, and releasing frozen assets; Tehran says nuclear talks could follow. Iran has also sought a ceasefire covering Lebanon, and Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has authorized the government to pursue negotiations. Iranian leaders say the country is prepared to retaliate, while reports of limited U.S. defensive strikes on targets on Qeshm Island after an alleged threat to a U.S. aircraft have raised fears of broader conflict. President Donald Trump says a deal remains possible, but major differences over Iran’s demands and the Strait’s reopening persist.
