Second Sunni Cleric Killed in Iran in Week
A Sunni cleric, Molavi Yousef Gorgij, was killed by unidentified gunmen outside his home in Zahedan, in Iran’s southeastern Sistan and Baluchestan province, according to Iranian state media. Iranian officials described Gorgij as a pro-government prayer leader who opposed sectarian division and Zionism, while the IRGC blamed terrorist groups but provided no evidence; some local outlets linked the attack to the Sunni Baluch militant group Jaish al-Adl, which has not claimed responsibility. The killing occurred amid renewed violence in the province, including clashes between security forces and gunmen, and follows the recent killing of a Kurdish Sunni cleric in western Iran. The region, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan and has a large Sunni Baluch population, has long faced attacks involving separatists, militants and other armed groups.
