Pentagon Estimates Iran War Cost at $47B
The U.S. military's estimated cost of the war in Iran reached $47.1 billion through October 16, about $3.5 billion above the previous update and more than 25 percent higher than the Pentagon's July estimate of $37.5 billion. More than $29 billion is for replacing expended munitions, about $6.1 billion for lost or damaged equipment, and nearly $12 billion for operational costs. The estimate excludes damage to U.S. bases in the Middle East. About 65 percent of U.S. Patriot missile interceptors have been depleted. More than 50,000 U.S. troops have served in the region, with at least 21 killed and 865 wounded. Trump launched the war jointly with Israel in February. An April ceasefire allowed Iran to dig out underground storage facilities and restore some defenses. Trump has imposed a naval blockade on Iran, and the Pentagon has prepared options for possible further strikes after the midterms. CONTESTED Left-rated coverage presents the sum as Trump's war cost and stresses political weight on Republicans before the elections. Right-rated coverage leads with the Pentagon's raised estimate and the size of the increase from July. Outlets do not dispute the dollar figures. Whether further strikes follow the midterms remains open.
