Reported U.S. Iran War Deaths Exceed Pentagon Tally

At least 22 U.S. service members have died since the Iran war began on February 28, according to five officials familiar with the Defense Department’s internal casualty records—at least four more than the 18 deaths listed in the Pentagon’s public database. A sixth official put the military death toll at 23, noting that some unreported deaths involved U.S. personnel stationed in the region but were not directly tied to combat. Three U.S. contractors based in the Middle East also reportedly died after combat operations began. The Washington Post could not independently establish the identities, dates, locations or circumstances of the unlisted deaths, and the Pentagon declined to explain the discrepancy.
