Those five tankers were probably carrying sanctioned oil so the US move makes sense as long as it stays limited to protecting the base.
Iran has no business targeting American positions in Jordan even if they lost tankers so both sides need to pull back before it gets out of hand.
US strikes on those tankers might cut Iran's oil money but hitting back at our base in Jordan risks pulling more troops into a wider fight.
