Massie files privileged impeachment articles against Hegseth over Iran actions

Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky has introduced eight privileged articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, accusing him of waging hostilities against Iran without congressional authorization and violating the War Powers Resolution. The articles also allege retaliation against Sen. Mark Kelly over constitutionally protected speech, inadequate safeguards for civilians, and other unauthorized military actions, including an operation in Venezuela. Because the resolution is privileged, the House could be required to vote within two legislative days, although Republicans are expected to have enough votes to defeat it. The effort could nonetheless pressure politically vulnerable Republicans as the unpopular war, rising fuel prices and President Donald Trump’s declining approval weigh on the approaching midterm elections. Hegseth’s allies, including Attorney General Todd Blanche and the Pentagon, have defended him and said the department remains united behind his leadership.
