Toledo Chemical Leak Prompts 1-Mile Evacuations, 3-Mile Shelter Orders
A chemical leak at MC Tank Terminal in North Toledo on the night of Oct. 20 led Toledo Fire & Rescue to evacuate residents within one mile and order shelter-in-place out to three miles. The release began around 9:00 to 9:30 p.m. and was still under monitoring the morning of Oct. 21. MC Tank Transport Inc. identified the substance as glycidyl methacrylate, used in plastics, paints and coatings. The city described it as an irritant that can burn eyes, nose, mouth and skin, with overexposure symptoms including headache, dizziness, tiredness, nausea and vomiting. Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said one first responder was hospitalized—the only known injury—and called the response an abundance of caution. Temporary shelters opened at Shoreland Elementary School and a Meijer parking lot, backed by the Red Cross and TARTA buses; nearby industrial sites evacuated workers as a precaution. Outlets disagree on key details. Freep.com reported officials said an explosion occurred in a chemical tank; democrata.es said the leak was not accompanied by any explosion. Democrata.es also reported more than 250,000 residents under alert and city schools closed Wednesday, figures other sources do not confirm. The site is cited as both 1266 and 1050 Progress Ave. Cause of the release and the full extent of exposure risk remained unresolved as crews continued monitoring.
