Sam Houston Fires Phil Longo After 3-17 Start
Sam Houston fired head coach Phil Longo after a 24-3 loss to Missouri State left the Bearkats 1-7 in 2026. Longo went 3-17 over two seasons, including a 2-10 debut in 2025, as the team struggled to compete in Conference USA and its offense ranked among the FBS’s weakest. Athletic director Bobby Williams said the university concluded a leadership change was needed; associate head coach Eric Raisbeck and defensive coordinator Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay will serve as interim co-head coaches for the rest of the regular season. Longo previously helped lead Sam Houston as an offensive coordinator before returning in 2024 to replace K.C. Keeler, and later held coordinator roles at Ole Miss, North Carolina and Wisconsin. The university has not named a permanent successor.
