Big 12 Fines UCF $100,000, Sets Fan Penalties
The Big 12 fined UCF $100,000 after fans at the Knights’ double-overtime win over BYU chanted derogatory language targeting members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The conference said UCF followed pregame protocols and removed some fans, and the fine will support student education initiatives; UCF said it is reviewing its options. The Big 12 also introduced escalating penalties for discriminatory conduct at games: a minimum $100,000 fine for a first confirmed incident, with repeat conduct in the same game potentially bringing an in-game penalty and an additional $500,000 fine. Fans ejected for discriminatory conduct will be barred from athletic events for the rest of the academic year. The action follows similar incidents involving BYU fans at other Big 12 schools.
