Pistons, Celtics set for daytime NBA season opener
The 2026-27 NBA season opens Tuesday in Detroit, where the Pistons host the Celtics in an afternoon matchup between last season’s top two Eastern Conference teams. Boston is nearly at full strength, with two-way guard Devin Carter sidelined by mononucleosis, while Paul George is set to make his first official appearance for the Celtics after joining in a trade that sent Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia. Detroit, which finished last season with the conference’s best record, has welcomed the chance to test itself against Boston. The 3 p.m. ET tip is also part of a new NBA-NBC effort to expand opening day into an all-day event, with festivities in Detroit and the league’s first nationally televised opening-day tripleheader.
