Minnesota defeated Orlando 115-93, pulling away after the Magic’s offense stalled and limiting them to 15 points in the third quarter. Wendell Carter Jr. led Orlando with 20 points and Franz Wagner added 18, while Paolo Banchero left with right ankle soreness. The loss followed Orlando’s season-opening defeat to Atlanta, in which turnovers, defensive breakdowns and missed free throws drew attention from new coach Sean Sweeney. Before facing Minnesota, Sweeney emphasized improving transition defense, positioning and communication; the Timberwolves entered the matchup after a 131-106 win over Miami, powered by Anthony Edwards and new backcourt partner LaMelo Ball.

Timberwolves open season in Miami after mixed preseason

Minnesota finished its preseason 3-3 and now turns to the regular season, with Anthony Edwards’ scoring encouraging but his mobility and the team’s bench depth among the concerns to watch. Despite optimism about the new roster, former coach Stan Van Gundy sees the Wolves as a likely sixth-place team, citing questions about defensive fit, injuries and lost frontcourt depth.

Anthony Edwards scored 45 points and set a Timberwolves Opening Night scoring record as Minnesota beat Miami 131-106, spoiling Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Heat debut despite his 35 points. LaMelo Ball had 21 points in his Minnesota debut, and Edwards joined Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan as the only players with multiple 40-point season openers.
