Diamondbacks Designate Gurriel Jr. for Assignment
The Arizona Diamondbacks designated outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for assignment Sunday, potentially ending the 32-year-old’s four-season tenure with the club. Gurriel has struggled since returning from a torn ACL and other injuries, batting .210 with two home runs and a .544 OPS in 51 games this season, all career lows. Arizona recalled infielder Jose Fernandez from Triple-A Reno to fill his roster spot. Gurriel was an All-Star in 2023 and helped the Diamondbacks reach the World Series, but his contract includes a $14 million club option and $5 million buyout for 2027, making it likely he will clear waivers.
