Phillies Executive Bill Giles Dies at 92

Bill Giles, the longtime Philadelphia Phillies executive and chairman emeritus, died Friday at 92, the team announced. Hired in 1969, he helped bring the team to Veterans Stadium, introduced creative promotions that helped make the Phillie Phanatic a beloved mascot, and later helped open Citizens Bank Park. Giles led the group that bought the Phillies in 1981 and served as team president through 1997, overseeing National League pennant-winning teams in 1983 and 1993; team leaders and Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt remembered him as a defining figure in the franchise’s history.
