ESPN places Padres 18th in early 2027 rankings
The Padres’ 91-win 2026 season and third straight playoff appearance have not eased concerns about their 2027 outlook: early power rankings place San Diego at No. 18 or No. 21, down from its end-of-season position. The main concern is a thin starting rotation, with Michael King opting out to enter free agency and several other starters also potentially departing or facing contract decisions. King was a key postseason contributor, including a two-inning save in an elimination game, but his likely departure leaves the team with major innings to replace; Joe Musgrove’s return from a long absence is another uncertainty. San Diego will need to address its pitching depth this offseason to keep its expensive roster competitive.
