Rutschman homers twice in emotional return to Baltimore as Red Sox win
Adley Rutschman returned to Camden Yards one month after being traded from the Orioles to the Red Sox and drew a standing ovation before hitting home runs in the first and sixth innings. Boston won the series opener 6-5, with Nick Sogard’s two-run homer in the eighth and Roman Anthony’s solo shot in the ninth helping offset early Baltimore damage. Baltimore took a lead in the fourth on back-to-back homers by Luis Robert Jr. and Pete Alonso, and Christian Encarnacion-Strand later hit a two-run homer off Aroldis Chapman in the ninth. Jake Bennett limited the Orioles to three runs over six innings, and Chapman earned his 31st save after the late scare. The night also underscored the emotional context of the trade, coming after Baltimore’s less successful recent seasons following its 2023 division-winning turnaround.
