Verlander Ends Career With Final Detroit Start

Justin Verlander ended his 21-season major-league career with a final start for Detroit against Pittsburgh at a sold-out Comerica Park. The 43-year-old allowed two runs and struck out six over 5⅓ innings before his wife and manager A.J. Hinch arranged for his 7-year-old daughter, Genevieve, to surprise him on the mound; he left the field in tears, holding her hand. Detroit won 4-3 on a walk-off, and Verlander finished with 266 wins, a 3.33 ERA and 3,560 strikeouts, eighth-most in major-league history. His career honors included three Cy Young Awards, the 2011 AL MVP, Rookie of the Year honors, two World Series titles and three no-hitters.
