Gavin Williams strikes out 13 as Guardians beat Blue Jays 6-1
The Toronto Blue Jays have won six of their last seven games and moved within one game of the Cleveland Guardians for the American League’s final wild-card spot after a 9-2 victory over Kansas City. Toronto’s offense has improved, while Max Scherzer is coming off a seven-inning, 10-strikeout outing and has moved into ninth place on MLB’s career strikeout list. Cleveland retained the final wild-card position after Brayan Rocchio hit a tying grand slam and a ninth-inning walk-off homer in a 7-6 comeback against Detroit. The Guardians recently beat Toronto behind Gavin Williams’ career-high 13 strikeouts over seven innings. In the National League, St. Louis remains four games behind Arizona for the final wild-card spot after winning two of three games against the Dodgers and is set to begin a series against Colorado, with Andre Pallante expected to return from the injured list.
