Pederson, Higashioka and Junis Decline Rangers Options to Enter Free Agency
Joc Pederson, Kyle Higashioka and Jakob Junis declined mutual options with the Texas Rangers and became free agents. Pederson turned down an $18 million option after hitting 26 home runs in 136 games; his season ended in September with a fractured wrist. His power against right-handed pitchers is balanced by limited defensive value and difficulty against left-handed pitching. Higashioka declined a $7 million option after appearing in 56 games amid injuries, while Junis rejected a $5 million option after posting a 3.64 ERA in 52 relief appearances. Pederson’s departure gives Texas an opportunity to pursue a younger, more versatile roster, and all three players can seek new teams.
