Giants’ Vitello Ejected for MLB-High Seventh Time

San Francisco Giants manager Tony Vitello was ejected for a major-league-leading seventh time on Sept. 27, 2026, during the third inning of the season finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Oracle Park. Plate umpire Ryan Blakney ejected him after he argued first-base umpire Marvin Hudson's ruling that Mookie Betts checked his swing on a 2-2 pitch from Sam Hentges, the second checked-swing attempt in the at-bat. Checked-swing calls are judgment calls and not reviewable. Vitello jumped up on the dugout rail and began arguing with the crew, then walked onto the field after the ejection to continue. He exchanged heated words with Blakney and argued with Hudson, who walked over from first base and got in Vitello's face before they separated. Hentges struck out Betts on the next pitch and retired Freddie Freeman to end the inning. The Giants lost in 10 innings, finishing at least 30 games below .500 for the first time since 2017. Vitello, a first-year manager and former University of Tennessee head coach with no prior professional playing or coaching experience, had only one ejection through June.
