Schlittler bolsters Cy Young case as Yankees blank Mets 2-0

Cam Schlittler strengthened his American League Cy Young case by allowing one hit over six scoreless innings, striking out eight and lowering his major-league-best ERA to about 1.95 as the Yankees defeated the Mets 2-0. The Yankees scored their only runs on solo homers by Ben Rice and Austin Wells, while their bullpen completed a three-hit shutout and David Bednar earned his 34th save. Schlittler left after Bo Bichette struck a 111.5-mph comebacker near the pitcher’s right leg, though he walked off under his own power and no serious injury was immediately reported. New York improved to 86-63, won two of three in the Subway Series and moved closer to securing its ninth postseason berth in 10 seasons, while remaining four games behind Tampa Bay in the AL East.
