Blackfeet descendants seek Redskins name restoration

Descendants of Blackfeet Chief Two Guns White Calf are campaigning to restore the Washington NFL team’s former Redskins name and logo, saying the chief’s image was a source of pride and that their family was not consulted when the team retired them in 2020. The logo, created in 1971 by Blackfeet leader Walter “Blackie” Wetzel, depicted the chief; Native American activist groups had opposed the name as a slur. The family is seeking a meeting with President Donald Trump, who has publicly supported bringing the name back, and also wants the team’s planned stadium named for the chief. The descendants’ effort reflects their family’s perspective and does not represent all Blackfeet people or Native Americans.
