NFL fines Greenlaw after helmet strike, Washington over touchdown celebration

The NFL fined 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw $12,537 for unnecessary roughness after his attempted punch at the ball struck Falcons receiver Drake London’s helmet during Atlanta’s 29-20 Week 7 win; no penalty was called during the game. Greenlaw said he was trying to dislodge the ball, and the incident came after he served a one-game suspension for a Week 5 headbutt. The league also fined Steelers tight end Darnell Washington $14,926 for a touchdown celebration it classified as an illegal celebration or vulgar act, and Steelers receiver Brandon Smith $4,916 for a helmet-related incident. Pittsburgh beat New Orleans 16-10, while Atlanta’s win ended its two-game skid and gave San Francisco its first loss of the season.
