LaPorta Frustrated by Stalled Lions Contract Talks

Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta said he is frustrated that contract-extension talks have stalled, arguing that his performance and the physical risks of football deserve recognition, particularly after a back injury ended his 2025 season. Speaking on the “Pardon My Take” podcast, he said he will continue playing professionally but is prepared to leave Detroit and seek a deal elsewhere if no agreement is reached. His rookie contract expires after the 2026 season, making him eligible for unrestricted free agency in 2027. Through five games in 2026, LaPorta has 27 catches for 316 yards and three touchdowns. Lions leadership has expressed interest in retaining him, but negotiations have reportedly stalled; Detroit could also use the franchise tag to keep him for 2027.
