Lions Beat Packers 20-17, Goff Backs Campbell Gamble
Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell’s decision to go for it on fourth-and-1 from his own 24-yard line late in a tied game against Green Bay drew criticism, but Campbell said he believed Jared Goff would get another chance to answer if the attempt failed. The gamble did fail, yet Detroit’s defense blocked a field goal, and Goff then helped set up Jake Bates’s game-winning kick as time expired. Goff defended Campbell’s approach, saying Detroit wanted to keep the ball away from Jordan Love and manage the clock so Green Bay would not get a final possession; former Steelers coach Mike Tomlin likewise argued that the call reflected trust in Goff and concern that Love could lead a winning drive. Goff’s strong start to the season, including 14 touchdown passes and no interceptions through six games, has reinforced Campbell’s confidence in him.
