Payton Rejects Broncos QB Change Amid Criticism
Broncos coach Sean Payton said he is not considering benching Bo Nix, despite the quarterback’s recent struggles and criticism from retired quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Denver is 4-2 but ranks near the bottom of the NFL in total offense, and its last two wins were driven largely by its defense; Payton said the coaching staff must improve the offensive line, running-game balance and opportunities for downfield plays. Payton, who recently resumed calling plays, said the responsibility for improving rests with the entire offense. Reports have differed on whether changes to offensive terminology under former playcaller Davis Webb contributed to Nix’s problems: one account described the changes as a source of confusion, while another cited a report that they were limited and largely minor. Payton expressed confidence the offense can improve, with Denver set to face Arizona next.
