Payne Foot Injury Clouds Commanders Trade Prospects

Washington defensive tackle Daron Payne suffered a significant foot injury in Friday’s practice and is expected to miss an extended period, with injured reserve likely pending further evaluation. The injury leaves the Commanders short on defensive-line depth as they prepare to face Philadelphia. Payne had been discussed as a possible trade-deadline candidate because of his contract, but an extended absence could make a deal unlikely. Washington’s competitiveness and Payne’s importance to the defense had also weighed in favor of keeping him, while the potential return of defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton could help replenish the interior line.
